Origin of current name: Named after William Adams Gunter (1871-1940). Longtime mayor of Montgomery, AL, and a fervent aviation pioneer and enthusiast, Gunter was instrumental in developing Maxwell Field for air corps training and establishing the Montgomery Municipal Airport that eventually became Gunter Field.
